Origins and Location
Tres Sabores is located in St. Helena in Napa Valley, California, on the western edge of the Rutherford Bench. The combination of soil, climate and topography creates a terroir that gives the wines their distinct character. Tastings and visits take place at the scenic property along South Whitehall Lane.
History and Philosophy
The winery was founded in 1999 by winemaker and owner Julie Johnson, who purchased the property in 1987. Her vision was to craft wines that express three essential elements: the grape, the place and the pairing.
Tres Sabores is run as a women-owned, small-scale winery with sustainability and respect for nature as guiding principles. The estate has been certified organic (CCOF) since the early 1990s, making it one of the early organic pioneers in Napa Valley.
Vineyards and Biodiversity
The estate grows Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah and Petit Verdot, with several vines planted in the 1970s. Dry farming is used where possible to maintain natural balance and produce wines with depth and structure.
In addition to grape growing, the property includes olive trees, pomegranates, Meyer lemons and other fruit trees, creating a rich and diverse farm environment.
Animals play an important role in the farm’s ecosystem. Sheep graze between the vineyard rows and keep the soil active, while hens roam freely and support natural biodiversity. Together, they contribute to a closed-loop system that strengthens soil health and supports long-term sustainability.
Wines and Style
Tres Sabores produces small-lot wines with a clear focus on craftsmanship and terroir expression. The portfolio includes old-vine Zinfandel, elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, selected blends and Sauvignon Blanc sourced from carefully chosen vineyard sites.
The wines are known for balance, freshness and a strong sense of place, with careful handling and small batches resulting in wines with character and complexity.
