In the sun-drenched region of Languedoc-Roussillon in southern France, nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Pyrenees, stands one of the wine world’s most influential and dynamic figures – Gérard Bertrand.
From professional rugby player to global wine ambassador, Bertrand has built a wine empire spanning over 16 estates, exporting to more than 170 countries. His mission is clear: to showcase the true potential of Languedoc through sustainability, precision, and passion.
From Rugby to the Rhythm of the Vine
Born into a winemaking family, Bertrand began helping with harvests at the family estate, Château de Villemajou in Boutenac, when he was just 10 years old. After his father’s sudden death in 1987, he took over the estate at the age of 22. Though his early adult life focused on a successful rugby career, he eventually dedicated himself fully to wine – and to transforming Languedoc from a bulk-producing region into a hub of terroir-driven excellence.
A Biodynamic Pioneer
Since 2002, Gérard Bertrand has been a leading advocate for biodynamic viticulture – a holistic approach based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner. All his estates, including Château l’Hospitalet, Clos d’Ora, Domaine de Cigalus and Château La Sauvageonne, are either fully certified by Demeter or in the process of certification. No synthetic chemicals are used; instead, the vineyards are guided by lunar cycles, natural composts, and ecological balance – resulting in wines with depth, purity, and a strong sense of place.
The Wines That Put Bertrand on the Map
Bertrand’s portfolio ranges from approachable everyday wines to high-end, age-worthy cuvées. Several of his wines have become global favorites:
Côte des Roses Rosé – A crisp, fresh and fruity rosé from the Mediterranean coast, known for its floral bottle design with a rose-shaped base. It’s one of France’s top-exported rosés.
Domaine de Cigalus Rouge – A bold, biodynamic red wine made from Bordeaux varietals. Elegant and powerful, with strong ageing potential.
Clos d’Ora – The crown jewel of Bertrand’s range. A meticulously crafted red from Minervois La Livinière, made entirely by hand. A blend of Syrah, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Carignan that represents the pinnacle of southern French winemaking.
Naturae Series – A line of organic, vegan wines made without added sulfites – perfect for the conscious consumer.
A Global Ambassador for Languedoc
Bertrand’s philosophy is simple: Languedoc-Roussillon has the same potential as the great wine regions of the world. With its diverse soils, microclimates, and indigenous grape varieties, the region offers incredible complexity. Bertrand has brought international attention to appellations like Terrasses du Larzac, La Clape, Limoux, and Pic Saint-Loup – all now celebrated for their unique expressions.
More Than Just Wine
Bertrand also creates immersive experiences. His flagship estate, Château l’Hospitalet near Narbonne, is not only a working winery but also a luxury hotel and cultural destination. It hosts the annual Jazz à l’Hospitalet festival, where fine wine, music, and gastronomy come together among the vines.
A Sustainable Future
For Bertrand, sustainability is more than a buzzword – it’s a core value. His goal is for all his estates to be fully biodynamic and carbon neutral. From reforestation efforts and circular water systems to regenerative farming practices, Bertrand is setting a powerful example of what the future of wine can look like.
