Nothing says “Swedish Christmas” quite like a warm cup of glögg. This spiced mulled wine is a holiday tradition enjoyed throughout the Nordic countries, perfect for cozy evenings, festive gatherings, or just a quiet moment by the fire.
Here's a simple and delicious recipe to make your own homemade glögg.
Easy Homemade Glögg Recipe
Ingredients (serves 4–6):
1 bottle of red wine (75 cl, preferably fruity)
1/2 cup (1 dl) sugar (adjust to taste)
1 orange (sliced)
2 cinnamon sticks
6 whole cloves
5 cardamom pods (lightly crushed)
1 piece of fresh ginger (approx. 2 cm, sliced)
1 star anise (optional)
1/2 cup raisins (optional)
1/2 cup blanched almonds (for serving)
Instructions:
1. Combine wine and spices
Pour the wine into a saucepan. Add the orange slices, sugar, and all the spices. Stir gently.
2. Heat slowly
Warm the mixture over low heat for about 20–30 minutes. Do not let it boil, or the alcohol will evaporate. Keep the temperature under 70 °C (160 °F).
3. Let it infuse
Remove from heat and let it steep for 15–30 minutes for a deeper flavor. Strain out the spices and orange slices.
4. Serve warm
Serve hot in mugs or heat-resistant glasses. Add a few raisins and blanched almonds to each cup for the traditional Swedish touch.
Tip:
Want a non-alcoholic version? Replace the wine with blackcurrant juice and a splash of water. Follow the same steps for a festive family-friendly drink.
