Every August, the coastal city of Málaga transforms into a dazzling spectacle of color, music, dance, and tradition. La Feria de Málaga is one of Spain’s most iconic festivals – a lively celebration of the city’s heritage and the passionate soul of Andalusia. Horses, flamenco, wine, and joy flood the streets, drawing both locals and visitors from around the world.

The History – Why Is the Feria Celebrated?

The origins of the Feria date back to August 19, 1487, when King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella reclaimed Málaga from Moorish rule during the Christian Reconquista. The first celebration was a religious procession in honor of the victory and Málaga’s patron saint, La Virgen de la Victoria.

What started as a solemn occasion has evolved into a week-long festival filled with music, dancing, food, and wine – always held in mid-August, with the biggest events taking place around August 19.

Two Fairs in One – Day and Night Festivities

What makes La Feria de Málaga unique is its dual nature: one fair during the day in the historic city center, and another at night in the fairgrounds outside the city.

Daytime Feria – Street Party in the City Center

During the day, Málaga’s historic core bursts with life. Streets are packed with people in traditional Andalusian attire – women in colorful flamenco dresses, men in hats and vests. Horse-drawn carriages parade through the city, and the air is filled with live music, flamenco, and sevillanas.

Local bars and pop-up stalls serve tapas, sangría, rebujito (sherry with lemon soda), and cold wines, creating an electric, joyful atmosphere that feels both intimate and all-embracing.

Nighttime Feria – Big Party at the Fairgrounds

When night falls, the celebration shifts to Recinto Ferial Cortijo de Torres, a dedicated fairground on the outskirts of the city. Over 100 “casetas” (tented party venues) offer everything from flamenco shows and DJs to traditional food and drinks.

There’s also a large amusement park with rides and games, making it perfect for both families and night owls.

Festival Highlights

  • Opening Night & Fireworks: The Feria begins with a massive fireworks display and a beachfront concert at La Malagueta – a magical kickoff to the week.

  • Horse & Carriage Parades: Elegant carriages and riders in traditional dress roam the city streets during the day.

  • Flamenco & Sevillanas: Music and dance are the festival's heartbeat. Many casetas have dance floors for everyone – no experience required.

  • Food & Drink: Enjoy Andalusian specialties and local wines. Sweet Moscatel wines from Málaga are a local favorite – served straight from the barrel.

  • Religious Traditions: A solemn procession in honor of Our Lady of Victory is still held during the Feria, connecting modern celebration with deep-rooted faith.

Wine & the Feria – A Natural Pairing

Wine flows freely during the Feria, and locals are proud of their sweet, sun-kissed Muscat wines. Try a glass of Málaga Virgen or Moscatel at a traditional bodega. It's the perfect opportunity to collect a wine cork with a story – perhaps a moment worth saving in a Corkframe back home.

A Must for Culture Lovers and Epicureans

La Feria de Málaga is more than a party – it’s a full immersion into Andalusian culture, hospitality, and rhythm. Whether you're a wine lover, cultural traveler, or simply in search of a good time, Málaga in August offers an unforgettable experience.

And once the music fades and the lights dim, what better way to remember it than saving that cork, jotting down a note, and turning it into art with a Corkframe – a celebration of good times, framed forever.
