Gingerbread, Blue Cheese & Wine – A Flavorful Winter Classic Reading Glögg & Orange Glazed Christmas Ham – A Festive Alternative to Mustard 3 minutes

Mustard-glazed Christmas ham is a Swedish classic, but if you're looking to try something new this holiday season, there are plenty of delicious and festive options to explore. A glaze made with glögg (Swedish mulled wine) and orange brings sweetness, acidity, and warm spice – and takes the flavor of your cooked ham to the next level.

Here’s a simple yet impressive recipe that fills your kitchen with the scent of Christmas and adds a flavorful twist to the traditional holiday table.

Recipe: Glögg & Orange Glazed Ham

Ingredients:

  • 1 cooked Christmas ham (approx. 3–4 kg / 6–9 lbs)

  • 100 ml glögg (Swedish mulled wine; strong variety recommended)

  • Zest of 1 organic orange

  • 1 tbsp fresh orange juice

  • 1 tbsp light syrup (or mild honey)

  • 1 egg yolk

  • 2 dl breadcrumbs (panko gives extra crunch)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the ham:
Remove the netting and skin from the cooked ham. Leave a thin layer of fat for flavor and moisture.

  2. Make the glaze:
Whisk together the glögg, orange zest, orange juice, syrup, and egg yolk in a bowl.

  3. Brush the ham:
Place the ham in an ovenproof dish. Generously brush the glaze all over the top.

  4. Add breadcrumbs:
Sprinkle the breadcrumbs over the glazed surface, pressing them gently to help them stick.

  5. Bake the glaze:
Preheat your oven to 225°C (437°F). Bake the ham in the middle of the oven for about 15–20 minutes, until the glaze is golden and crispy.

  6. Let it rest:
Remove the ham from the oven and let it rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing. This helps the juices settle and makes for cleaner cuts.

Tips for a Successful Alternative Glaze

  • Balance is key: A great glaze needs sweetness (glögg or syrup), acidity (orange juice or vinegar), and fat (egg yolk) to create depth of flavor and texture.

  • Spice it up: Add ground cinnamon, ginger, or even a touch of chili for a modern twist.

  • Crunch factor: Use panko or mix the breadcrumbs with chopped nuts or seeds for an extra crisp finish.

  • Boost the flavor: Sprinkle a pinch of flaky sea salt over the top before baking – it enhances both sweetness and depth.
