Wurstmarkt – where wine meets tradition and German festivity
Every September, the small wine town of Bad Dürkheim in Germany’s Pfalz region transforms into a vibrant celebration for the world’s largest wine festival: Wurstmarkt. Despite the name ("Sausage Market"), the event is just as much about wine, community, and culture – a tradition that dates back over 600 years.
When is Wurstmarkt 2025?
Wurstmarkt takes place over two weekends:
September 12–15, 2025
September 19–22, 2025
The festival runs from Friday through Monday, with Mondays being especially beloved by locals.
Where?
Bad Dürkheim is located in the heart of the Pfalz wine region, about an hour from Frankfurt. The area is known for its sun-ripened Riesling grapes, charming wine villages, and lush vineyards – a destination as delicious as it is picturesque.
Wine in abundance – and in new ways
During the festival, you can sample over 300 different wines, primarily from the Pfalz region. Traditional Weinzelte (wine tents) and smaller “Schubkärchler” (open-air wine stalls) serve wine in half-liter glasses known as “Dubbeglas.”
Popular varieties include:
Riesling – fresh and fruity, ideal with sausage and sauerkraut
Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) – light red, perfect for grilled bratwurst
Weißherbst – a rosé-style wine that pairs well with spicier dishes
Sausage + wine = a perfect match
Sausage is central to the festival. Classics include:
Bratwurst – mild and juicy, best with a dry Riesling
Currywurst – spicier flavor that works well with a rounder wine like Dornfelder
Leberwurst on bread – nicely complemented by a Gewürztraminer with a touch of sweetness
Tip: Try different pairings and dare to explore. Sausage and wine is a more exciting combination than many expect!
More than just food and drink
Wurstmarkt is a folk festival filled with:
Carnival rides and Ferris wheels
Live music and dancing in tents
Craft stalls and local delicacies
Wine culture in both traditional and modern forms
Plan your trip
Wurstmarkt draws large crowds, so it's wise to book accommodation early. Bad Dürkheim has cozy hotels, and nearby towns like Neustadt or Deidesheim also offer great options.

For wine enthusiasts, Wurstmarkt is more than just a festival – it's a celebration of German wine culture, culinary tradition, and joyful togetherness. Whether you’re there to party, taste, or simply wander among the vineyards, this is an experience not to be missed.
