Best time to visit Transylvania

May–June and September–October are often the sweet spot: comfortable temperatures, beautiful landscapes, and a calmer feel around major sights. Early autumn can add a moody, misty atmosphere in the Carpathians.

Which airport should you fly to?

Cluj-Napoca (CLJ) – a strong choice if you want a bigger city start/end point and flexible connections.
Sibiu (SBZ) – convenient if you want Sibiu as a base and day trips in southern Transylvania.
Brașov–Ghimbav (GHV) – closest to Brașov and Bran, but usually more limited flight options.
Bucharest (OTP) – often the easiest for flights; continue to Transylvania by train or car.

Three stops that deliver the best Transylvania vibe

Brașov + Bran Castle
Brașov is an excellent base with a walkable old town and great access to Bran Castle for classic Dracula atmosphere.
Sighișoara
One of the most charming medieval towns in the region. The citadel feels especially memorable in the evening, when the streets quiet down and the light turns soft.
Sibiu + Biertan
Sibiu brings elegant architecture, cafés, and a calm city rhythm. Pair it with a trip to Biertan and the fortified church villages for a slower, more authentic countryside contrast.

Distances between stops (by car, approx.)

Brașov → Bran Castle: about 31 km, around 30 min
Brașov → Sighișoara: about 118 km, around 1 h 45–2 h
Sighișoara → Sibiu: about 92 km, around 1 h 20–1 h 40
Sibiu → Biertan: about 67 km, around 1 h–1 h 15
Optional photo stop: Sibiu → Corvin Castle (Hunedoara): about 129 km, around 1 h 30–2 h

What to eat

Sarmale: cabbage rolls, often served with mămăligă (polenta) and sour cream
Mămăligă: Romanian polenta in many variations—ideal after a long day of walking
Papanași: a classic dessert served with jam and sour cream

Wine and drinks to look for

The Târnave area is known for white wines. Look for local grapes like Fetească Regală and Fetească Albă on wine lists.
Quick pairing: crisp whites with cheese, grilled dishes, chicken, and anything served with mămăligă.

Where to stay (easy choices)

Brașov: stay in or just next to the Old Town for evening strolls and an easy day trip to Bran.
Sighișoara: choose a central stay in or near the citadel to catch the atmosphere early and late.
Sibiu: stay central for restaurants and a smooth day trip to Biertan.
Countryside (optional): a guesthouse near the Biertan area is a great way to slow down and wake up to rural Transylvania.
