Looking for an easy yet sophisticated cocktail recipe? The Negroni Sbagliato is a sparkling twist on a classic – perfect for those who want something a bit lighter, but just as stylish.
What is a Negroni Sbagliato?
The word Sbagliato means “mistake” in Italian. This drink was born when a bartender accidentally used sparkling wine instead of gin while mixing a Negroni – and the result was so delicious, it became a classic in its own right.
Unlike the traditional Negroni (made with gin, vermouth and Campari), the Sbagliato replaces the gin with prosecco – making it lighter, more refreshing, and ideal as an aperitivo.
Negroni Sbagliato Recipe
Ingredients (1 cocktail):
-
3 cl sweet red vermouth
-
3 cl Campari
-
6 cl sparkling wine (such as prosecco)
-
Ice
-
Orange slice or twist for garnish
Instructions:
-
Fill a lowball glass (old fashioned glass) with ice.
-
Pour in the vermouth and Campari.
-
Top with sparkling wine.
-
Stir gently.
-
Garnish with a thin slice of orange or a twist of orange zest.
Tip: Use a dry prosecco to balance the sweetness of the vermouth. Want a bit more acidity? Add a dash of fresh orange juice.
When to Serve a Negroni Sbagliato
This cocktail is ideal as a pre-dinner drink – especially when paired with Italian appetizers, cheese boards or antipasti. It's also a great choice for those who find the classic Negroni a bit too strong.
