In the heart of Chianti Classico, just outside Gaiole in Chianti in Tuscany, lies Castello di Ama – one of Italy’s most celebrated wineries.

Here, history, winemaking craftsmanship, and contemporary culture come together in a setting that is as much an experience as it is a destination.

A story of revival and vision

The village of Ama dates back to medieval times, but the modern Castello di Ama was established in the 1970s when four families joined forces to restore the neglected vineyards. Their ambition was clear: to elevate Chianti Classico to a world-class wine category.

Under the leadership of Marco Pallanti, a key figure in the estate’s development, the winery refined its approach with a strong focus on vineyard selection and respect for terroir. Castello di Ama quickly became a pioneer in the quality revolution that reshaped Chianti during the 1980s and 1990s.

Their most popular and iconic wines

Castello di Ama is best known for its elegant, structured wines, with Sangiovese at the core. Some of their most acclaimed labels include:

  • Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo – the flagship wine, made from carefully selected grapes from the estate’s top vineyards. Complex, age-worthy, and highly expressive.

  • Chianti Classico Ama – a more approachable wine that still reflects the house style, with balance between fruit, acidity, and spice.

  • L’Apparita – a cult wine and one of Tuscany’s first 100% Merlot wines. Silky, concentrated, and internationally sought-after.

  • Vigneto Bellavista – a single-vineyard wine praised for its elegance, depth, and precision.

Art and wine in harmony

Since 1999, Castello di Ama has also been home to a unique contemporary art project. Internationally renowned artists have been invited to create site-specific installations across the estate. The result is a living exhibition where art blends seamlessly into cellars, gardens, and historic buildings, enriching the overall visitor experience.
